# Digital loyalty compared with paper punch cards

Paper punch cards are cheaper to start, need no setup, and work when the power is out. Digital cards survive a lost wallet, can be measured, and cannot be forged with a borrowed stamp. If you only want to reward regulars and never want to know who they are, paper is genuinely fine.

Paper punch cards have run loyalty programmes for decades and they are not
foolish. It is worth being clear about what they do well before listing what
they do not.

## Where paper wins

**Cost to start.** A few hundred cards is a small print run and no monthly fee.

**Zero setup.** There is no configuration, no account, and nothing for staff to
learn beyond where the stamp lives.

**It works when nothing else does.** Power cut, network out, a customer whose
phone has died. Paper carries on.

**Nobody has to opt in to anything.** There is no signup, no email address, and
no privacy question to answer.

## Where paper loses

**It disappears.** Wallets get emptied, cards go through the wash, bags get
changed. Every lost card is a customer who was part way to a reward and now
starts again, or more often, stops.

**You learn nothing.** You cannot tell how many cards are in circulation, how
many get completed, or whether your threshold is right. You are running a
programme with no instrument panel.

**It is trivially forged.** A distinctive stamp helps, and it does not solve the
problem. Anyone with the same stamp, or a decent photocopier, can manufacture
loyalty you never earned.

**Liability is invisible.** Outstanding cards are a real obligation and you have
no idea how large it is.

## Where digital wins, honestly stated

A digital card sits in the phone the customer already carries, survives a lost
wallet, and lets you see completion rates and visit frequency. It also lets you
reach the people who joined, which is the part that most changes what a loyalty
programme can do for you.

## Where digital genuinely costs you

It is not free, it requires setup, and a small number of customers will decline
to hand over an email address. If your entire objective is to thank regulars and
you have no interest in measuring anything, paper does that job.

The case for changing is strongest when you have started asking questions your
punch cards cannot answer.
