# What is a joining bonus?

A joining bonus is a voucher you give a new customer automatically, the first time they are scanned at your venue. You can give it straight away or up to 24 hours later. A delay means they have to still be around to get it, rather than scanning once and leaving.

A joining bonus is the most common reason a venue issues a voucher without
anyone buying one.

## Why delay it

Granting instantly rewards the scan, not the relationship. A delay of a few
hours means the reward arrives to somebody who might come back for it, which is
the behaviour worth paying for.

## It re-checks before granting

When a delayed bonus comes due, the offer is checked again. A merchant may have
turned the bonus off or unpublished the offer in the meantime, in which case
nothing is granted and nothing errors.
