# What is a ledger event?

A ledger event is a permanent record that something happened: a voucher issued, a reward used, stock sold. Records like these are only ever added, never edited or deleted. That is what lets anyone check the numbers later and get the same answer.

You will rarely need this word. It matters because of what it guarantees.

## Records are added, never changed

When something happens, a record is written. If it later needs correcting,
another record is added saying so. Nothing is quietly edited or removed.

## Why that matters to you

A running total that can be edited cannot be checked by anyone. A list of
records that only grows can be added up again at any time and will give the
same answer.

That is what makes your sales figures, your settlement and your bill something
you can question and have answered, rather than something you have to take on
trust.

## Where you meet it

Corrections to your stock go through this list rather than around it, which is
why they ask you for a note. Your settlement is worked out from it, and so is
the customer count your monthly price is based on.
