# What are loyalty points?

Points count the money a customer spends. Spend a dollar, earn a set number of points. Stamps count things instead, so a business picks one or the other and cannot run both.

A business picks points or stamps when it sets up, and cannot run both. Which
one suits it depends on whether the things it sells cost about the same.

## When points fit better

Points suit a business where prices vary a lot. A stamp treats a flat white and
a full lunch the same way. If a big order earns the same as the smallest one,
your best customers are getting your worst deal.

## When stamps fit better

Stamps suit a business where most sales are about the same size, most obviously
a cafe. They are also much easier to explain, and a programme a customer cannot
explain to a friend spreads slowly.
