# What is a stamp in a loyalty programme?

A stamp is one step towards a reward. The business decides what earns one, usually buying a particular item. Buy three coffees in one go and you collect three stamps. When you have enough, you get the reward.

A stamp is the smallest step in a loyalty programme. On its own it is worth
nothing. It only matters as part of a reward.

## What earns a stamp

The business decides. Most often it is one stamp for each item of a certain
kind, such as one stamp per coffee. Some businesses give a stamp for any sale
over a set amount.

Because a stamp follows what you buy rather than the trip you made, buying three
coffees at once collects three stamps. You do not have to come back three times.

## Stamps and points are different

A stamp counts things. A point counts money.

A business picks one or the other and cannot run both. Which one suits them
depends on whether the things they sell cost about the same.
