# What is a wallet pass?

A wallet pass is a loyalty card a customer installs in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. It shows their progress and a scannable barcode, and it updates itself as they earn. The barcode rotates on a timer, so a screenshot of it stops working.

A wallet pass puts a loyalty card where a customer already looks: the wallet app
on their phone, alongside their boarding passes and event tickets. It needs no
app install and it updates itself.

## The rotating barcode

The value encoded in the pass barcode changes on a timer rather than staying
fixed. That is a deliberate security property: a screenshot of somebody's pass,
or a photo taken over their shoulder, stops being usable within minutes. Staff
scanning the live pass see no difference.
