# How to write loyalty terms customers understand

State what earns credit, how much is needed, what the reward is, whether anything expires, and that you may change the programme with notice. Five plain sentences. Terms that read as a trap generate the disputes they were written to prevent.

Loyalty terms are usually either absent or copied from somewhere they do not
fit. Both cause the same problem: nobody knows what was promised, including you.

## The five things to say

**What earns credit.** Be specific enough that a staff member and a customer
would agree. "One stamp per transaction over $5" beats "one stamp per purchase".

**How much is needed.** The threshold, plainly.

**What the reward is.** Including any limits, such as one reward per visit.

**Whether anything expires.** If nothing expires, say so; it is a genuine
selling point. If something does, say exactly when and give a reasonable window.

**That you may change or end the programme with notice.** You need this, and
saying it plainly is better than burying it.

## Language that causes disputes

Anything that reads as reserving the right to take value away without reason.
Customers read that as a trap and behave accordingly, and it does not actually
protect you from a remedy you owe under consumer law.

## Expiry is a commercial decision with legal edges

Expiry bounds your obligation, which is legitimate. Aggressive expiry on
anything a customer paid for is a different matter, and in some jurisdictions
minimum periods for prepaid value are regulated. Take advice before setting a
short one on anything purchased.

## What terms cannot do

They cannot remove rights a customer has under consumer law. A remedy you owe is
owed regardless of how the customer paid, and regardless of whether the value was
a gift. Writing otherwise does not make it so; it just makes the document less
credible.

## Where to put them

Where somebody would look: alongside the programme itself. Terms nobody can find
are functionally terms you do not have.
