What is a wallet pass?

A wallet pass is a loyalty card a customer installs in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. It shows their progress and a scannable barcode, and it updates itself as they earn. The barcode rotates on a timer, so a screenshot of it stops working.

Also called: Apple Wallet pass, Google Wallet pass, Loyalty card.

A wallet pass puts a loyalty card where a customer already looks: the wallet app on their phone, alongside their boarding passes and event tickets. It needs no app install and it updates itself.

The rotating barcode

The value encoded in the pass barcode changes on a timer rather than staying fixed. That is a deliberate security property: a screenshot of somebody’s pass, or a photo taken over their shoulder, stops being usable within minutes. Staff scanning the live pass see no difference.
